George Bernard Shaw’s much celebrated classic British drama, Pygmalion, arrives at Brighton’s Theatre Royal this week with an all-star cast led by BAFTA winning Alistair McGowan as Henry Higgins, Rula Lenska as Mrs Higgins, and Eastenders own Jamie Foreman as Alfred Doolittle.
This production of Pygmalion is directed by Tony award-winning director, David Grindley and marks the 100th anniversary of Shaw’s ever-popular masterpiece.
Pygmalion tells the story of the aristocratic Professor Henry Higgins (McGowan) who makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering that he can transform the speech and manners of Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, and pass her off as a society lady at an ambassador’s garden party. The play is packed with Shaw’s scathing wit and humour and is seen very much as a commentary on women’s role in the society of the day.
So, if you’re heading out to enjoy the show, why not complete your evening with a pre-show dinner at Brighton’s best Italian restaurant, Pinocchio?
