Brighton Theatre Royal welcomes a new production of Agatha Christie’s Black Coffee this week, starring British acting institution, Robert Powell as moustachioed Belgian sleuth, Hercule Poirot. The cast also includes TV’s Liza Goddard, Gary Mavers and Ben Nealon.
The action takes place at an idyllic English country estate belonging to an eccentric physicist named Sir Claud Amory. When Poirot arrives on the scene, Amory has been murdered, so our hero is thrust into a complex web of deceit and treachery populated by a gaggle of aristocratic types, each with an agenda of their own. Poirot must unravel this mystery and deduce which of Sir Claud’s friends and family members is the culprit.
Black Coffee has received some excellent reviews from all corners. Powell’s performance in particular has drawn admiration from even the most ardent critics and staunch David Suchet fans. Powell’s mannerisms, accent and general demeanour bring the dapper, Belgian detective to life and the darkly humorous undertones in the play give this performance a rich, added depth.
So, if Black Coffee sounds like your, errr, cup of tea, then why not make it a special evening with a delicious pre-show Italian meal at nearby Pinocchio?
