Legendary British comic, Dawn French arrives in Brighton today for the start of a 5-night run at Brighton Theatre Royal with her new 2014 solo show, 30 Million Minutes.
Unbelievably, 30 Million Minutes is Dawn French’s first ever solo tour. How it has taken French, one of Britain’s truly great comic actors 30 million minutes – or 56 years, to bring her unique brand of comedy to the stage is beyond us, but we’re certainly glad she did.
30 Million Minutes, rather than being a conventional stand-up routine, is a look back over French’s not uneventful life and career so far: The premature death of the father she idolised when French was in her early 20’s, her fertility struggles, her decades-long battle to accept her own body image in the face of constant sniping from the media, her ill-fated marriage to Lenny Henry and much, much more. These are serious subjects, and French wilfully exposes her own insecurities and vulnerabilities, while at the same time, displaying the wicked observational humour and jolly charisma that has made her the national treasure she is.
Here at Pinocchio, we’ve been looking forward to this show for a while. It’s not every day that a bona-fide TV legend plays the theatre a few doors up the road.
