Brighton Theatre Royal is set for an ambitious run of shows beginning this Wednesday evening as director, Blanche McIntyre brings nine short plays to Brighton’s famous stage between Wednesday and Saturday.
The plays in question are the handiwork of a certain Noel Coward, who would no doubt find great amusement in the clumsy headline he’s just forced me to write. The nine plays are all one act only and are grouped under the umbrella title – Tonight at 8:30.
This current tour represents the first time all nine plays have been performed together in the UK since 1936 when Coward himself starred in them. Each performance at Brighton Theatre Royal will stage three of the nine plays with a different three the following night.
The plays themselves are classic Coward and were written specifically to showcase his own acting talents, as well as those of Gertrude Lawrence, his leading lady of choice for many years. Theatre-goers can expect wide variety between the plays, and it is fair to say that no two performances are likely to be the same. Indeed, Coward himself hoped that the brevity and variety of Tonight at 8:30 would be what made the plays so special, as he stated in his programme notes for an early performance:
“A short play, having a great advantage over a long one in that it can sustain a mood without technical creaking or over padding, deserves a better fate, and if, by careful writing, acting and producing I can do a little towards reinstating it in its rightful pride, I shall have achieved one of my more sentimental ambitions.”
