Feast Is Feast As Hit Comedy Opens At Brighton Theatre Royal

Following a spectacular West End run at Trafalgar Transformed, one of the best British comedies East is East kicked off it’s UK tour in sunny old Brighton with a 9 day run at the famous Theatre Royal. (11/06/15 – 20/06/15).

You may be familiar with the 1999 film but might be surprised to learn it was originally written for the stage by Ayub Khan-Din.

Award-winning actress Pauline McLynn (Father Ted, Shameless and EastEnders) stars as Ella with Simon Nagra (Dara and Rafta Rafta for National Theatre) as George and Ashley Kumar (EastEnders) as Tariq Khan – as well as some of the original cast from the West End production Ashley Kumar, Darren Kuppan and Sally Banks.

East is East is as serious as it is funny and depicts a semi-autobiographical account of British-Asian life in the 1970’s. The story is based around a Salford fish and chip shop owner named George Khan (whose children refer to him as Genghis) George expects his family to reject Western conventions and follow his strict Pakistani-Muslim ways but his children, with an English mother and having been brought up in Britain, increasingly see themselves as British and start to rebel against their fathers rules.

Tensions rise even further when the mother Ella gets caught in the cross fire with her loyalties divided between her marriage and the free will of her children. While addressing serious modern cultural issues, East Is East still manages to be hilarious in it’s approach.
