The Nation’s Favourite Movie Hits Brighton’s Famous Stage

This week Brighton Theatre Royal welcomes Bill Kenwright’s new stage production of The Shawshank Redemption to the famous old stage.

The play, like the famous 1994 feature film, is based on the 1982 short story by Stephen King entitled Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption, and chronicles the story of Andy Dufresne; an innocent man sentenced to a double life sentence in the notorious, maximum security Shawshank prison facility for the horrific murder of his wife and her lover.  Despite Dufresne maintaining his innocence, the tough Shawshank regime threatens to swallow him whole until he strikes up an unlikely friendship with prison fixer, Ellis ‘Red’ Redding.

Red helps Andy adjust to prison life and provides him with a few prison comforts, but when the sadistic prison governor, Warden Stammas begins to exploit Andy and his skills for accountancy, he decides enough is enough and hatches a daring escape plan.

This new production of Shawshank coincides with the 21st anniversary of the famous feature film of the same name and features a star-studded cast of TV actors, including Ian Kelsey as Andy Dufresne and Patrick Robinson as Red.
